Information about the event:

Evidence-informed therapies for PTSD can be either rigid and prescriptive, making it difficult to stay client-centered, or largely theoretical, sometimes lacking in practical application. Developed by a neuroscientist and clinical psychologist, Neural Desensitization and Integration Training (NDIT) is a flexible, module-based, trauma-focused approach to PTSD that integrates elements from EMDR, multichannel eye movement integration, prolonged exposure, IFS, and cognitive behavioral therapies.

NDIT helps clients recover from post-trauma symptoms by specifically targeting and restoring the healthy functioning of these five key brain regions impacted by trauma:

  • Amygdala
  • Hippocampus
  • Insula
  • Cingulate cortex and Prefrontal cortex.

Grounded in decades of both brain science and empirical clinical research, NDIT is the first approach of its kind to bridge the gap between neuroscience and clinical practice.

NDIT consists of five distinct modules, each of which focuses on key skills associated with healthy brain change in specific brain regions. NDIT facilitates therapeutic brain change by teaching clients how to:

  • enhance attunement and connection with others (using techniques targeting multiple brain regions)
  • safely reconnect with their bodies (using insula-targeted techniques)
  • regulate their nervous system (using amygdala-targeted techniques)
  • strengthen their cognitive abilities (using cingulate and prefrontal cortex-targeted techniques)
  • gently process trauma in a titrated manner, minimizing retraumatization (using hippocampus and prefrontal cortex-targeted techniques).

Additionally, NDIT focuses on what clients can do outside of therapy sessions to facilitate faster progress in therapy. NDIT modules are strategically sequenced to accelerate neuroplasticity, helping clients move with natural brain change, not against it.

This introductory NDIT workshop teaches clinicians basic NDIT skills from start to finish, equipping them to immediately begin using NDIT skills in their own practice.

What will you learn?

This workshop will provide participants clinical knowledge and tools to:

  • State at least three components of neural networks.
  • Name one brain region associated with social connection.
  • Learn and practice two techniques for building the alliance.
  • Discuss the role of coordinated movements in alliance-building.
  • Describe the function of the insula.
  • State at least three techniques for reconnecting with the body.
  • Name two types of grounding exercises.
  • Describe the neuroscience of stress regulation.
  • Practice at least one technique for regulating the stress response.
  • Explain one function of the prefrontal cortex.
  • Describe why bilateral movement can facilitate desensitization to distressing thoughts or memories.
  • Identify two ways to alter visual or auditory memory components that decreases their intensity during imaginal exposure.
  • Name at least two brain regions involved in processing trauma.
  • Identify one way to select a target for processing.

~ Paola F., 2023

I took Dr. Sweeton's course on neural desensitization and it is literally the best course I have ever taken. Her ability to teach material from an evidence-based grounding but infuse practical and accessible tools to use with clients who have trauma was a wonderful blend of the research and the practicality of doing therapy. She is one of the most excellent teachers I have had the privilege of learning under. Take her courses, you won't be disappointed! ~ Katie G., 2022

Dr. Sweeton provided a very organized, engaging and informative course on Neural Desensitization: Tools to Integrate EMDR, IFS, & Other Approaches to Trauma. This course is a great introduction to NDIT. ~ Michelle W., 2022

I just attended Dr. Sweeton's wonderful two-day workshop. It was beyond my expectations. One of the best courses I have ever attended. Not only did she explain the complex interrelationships of the brain and how it is affected by prolonged trauma exposure but she also demonstrated and gave us practical techniques to help heal each of these areas of the brain. This knowledge has greatly enhanced my counseling practice results. ~ Suzanne, G., 2021

Dr. Sweeton is an amazing presenter. She spoke for 6 hours without ever seeming to need a note even though every minute was packed with useful information for anyone dealing with trauma. She integrated neuroscience skillfully with her clinical applications. I thought she handled questions effectively as well because she paused about every 45 minutes to answer questions she thought would be applicable to the majority of attendees. I could not recommend her more. ~ Judith C., 2022
